Webinar Recap - De-Risking Renewable Projects at Speed with Solkraft Sør

This session covered the screening rules that kill sites early, the five-stage engine that carries the survivors through to permitting, and a live walkthrough of a project currently in a hearing.

What was covered

Across distribution-level grid queues, roughly one in four solar and battery projects reaches operation, and as few as one in ten in markets where the queue has badly overshot the target. Three out of four projects sitting in a queue will never exist. That makes development a capital allocation problem before it’s a grid problem, and the variable that decides the outcome is how early and how cheaply you can rule a project out.

Most of the cost in early development is committed before anyone knows whether a project is real. Consultant fees, landowner conversations and connection applications all get spent while the answer is still open. Solkraft Sør’s response was to move the walk-away decision to the front of the process and make it cheap to reach.

The session walked through how that works on live projects, covering:

  • Grid-first screening, and why a site far from capacity doesn’t get built however good the ground is

  • The constraint list that rules sites out, from distance to grid and municipal zoning through cultural heritage, nature types and species, outdoor recreation, slope and irradiance. Ten candidate sites typically leave one or two standing

  • The five stages the survivors run through: screening, pre-design, landowner and municipal engagement, redesign after the site visit, then grid connection and permitting

  • One map as the single source of truth behind political presentations, public hearings, landowner agreements, grid applications and EIA documentation

  • A live walkthrough of Sandripheia Solar and Battery Park in Vennesla, 4.5 MW of PV with a 4 MW / 8 MWh battery, around 5.6 GWh a year, connected to the local 20 kV network

  • The town hall meeting on 13 August, where the team ran the map and 3D renders live in front of the room, and what that did to the questions they got back

Why this matters

Speed in development isn’t how fast you can produce a layout. It’s how quickly you can tell which projects deserve one. Every hour spent on a site that was never going to connect, or was never going to clear a hearing, is an hour taken from a project that would have. Solkraft Sør run a harder siting rule than most developers would accept and still move a 24-project portfolio with three people, because the rule does its work at the point where changing your mind is still free. And the same map that filters the sites produces the drawings that go to the landowner, the municipality and the DSO, so nothing gets rebuilt between stages.
